Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can cause frequent gut distress like bloating, cramps, constipation, or diarrhea. One common way to relieve IBS is a challenging diet eliminating a long list of foods containing hard-to-digest sugars known as FODMAPs.

A recent small trial suggests a simpler approach: try targeting only certain FODMAPs. People who eliminated specific culprits—found in foods like onions, garlic, beans, and wheat—often saw their IBS symptoms improve.
